What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners like Invisalign are essentially plastic replicas of your teeth that are used to straighten your smile without the use of traditional braces. These plastic aligners, or “trays,” exert gentle pressure on your teeth, shifting them into the desired position gradually. Every few weeks, you will switch to a new set of aligners as your teeth begin to move into their proper formation. Clear aligners are great for patients with slightly crooked teeth, small gaps, or other minor dental imperfections. They are not suitable for every type of dental flaw, so be sure to consult with Dr. Kwiatkowski to discuss your candidacy. If your teeth cannot be altered by clear aligners, he may recommend clear braces for accelerated smiles.
The Benefits of Clear Aligners
There are plenty of reasons to love our clear aligners. They are extremely inconspicuous and do not have a noticeable impact on your appearance. Unlike braces, clear aligners allow you to achieve a straighter smile without a mouthful of metal. They can also be removed to eat or drink, so you don’t have to deprive yourself of any foods that may be restricted by braces, like gummy candy or soda pop. Braces can also make it difficult to properly brush and floss. With clear aligners, you can simply take them out of your mouth when you’re ready to complete your oral hygiene routine. They must be worn for around 22 hours per day, but most patients find them to be very comfortable – they don’t have any sharp metal components.
How Can I Get Clear Aligners?
The first step towards a more beautiful smile is a consultation with Dr. Kwiatkowski. He’ll take a look at your teeth and identify which concerns can be addressed with clear aligners. In order to create your custom set, he’ll take a mold or impression of your teeth. When you receive your first pair of aligners, you’ll wear them for a week or two before moving on to the next set. As your teeth move, the old set won’t fit and can be discarded according to your dentist’s instructions. You’ll visit Dr. Kwiatkowski every 4 – 6 weeks for a quick check-up, and he can ensure that your teeth are moving in the right direction. Most patients wear their clear aligners for a year to 18 months, although some may only need to use them for 6 months.
