If you are wondering if dentures are right for you, you’ve come to the right place. Dr. Kwiatkowski and his team have helped patients receive quality dentures for decades. We are ready to help you evaluate the pros and cons of dentures to see if they are the right option for you.

This video shows you how removable dentures can replace your missing teeth, while mimicking their natural appearance and restoring their overall function.

How Dentures Work

Dentures are a way to restore critical functions like chewing and speech to your mouth. Patients typically look into getting dentures if they are missing a significant portion of their natural teeth. Otherwise, dental implants may be a better option for you.

Dentures are non-permanent mouthpieces that are inserted into your gums. They are removable sets of fake teeth that help you chew and talk, as well as fill in gaps in your smile. Many patients who receive dentures do so because they lack confidence in their smiles. Others choose dentures because they may be more cost-effective than receiving implants. We may recommend dentures because they are generally time-efficient and an affordable way to fix gaps in your smile if you are missing lots of teeth.

Full Dentures vs. Partial Dentures

There are two types of dentures: full and partial. The ones you receive depend on how many teeth you have and what your dental goals are.

Full dentures are the best option if you have no natural teeth left. In many cases, patients with only a few teeth remaining elect to have them pulled in order to make room for a full denture. Full dentures come in two styles: conventional or immediate. The conventional style is fitted after your gums have had time to heal (if you elect to have teeth pulled to make room for a full denture). Immediate dentures instantly restore function to your mouth. While they can be a quick way to fill in gaps, they do not always fit as well as conventional dentures.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are for patients who still have teeth remaining and do not wish to remove them. Partial dentures cover one or more portions of the mouth that are missing teeth and simply fill in the gaps in your smile. Partials use a metal framework with clasps that help them stay in place in your mouth.

Caring for Your Dentures

Many patients believe that receiving dentures means an end to tooth care—you can’t get a cavity if you don’t have teeth, right? However, you need to care for and maintain your dentures in order to avoid mouth infections and denture repair.

After eating, you should rinse your dentures. In addition, it is important to clean them using a soft-bristled toothbrush at least once per day. This prevents bacteria from building up on your dentures, which could give you bad breath and jeopardize the function of your denture. Every night, you should soak your dentures in water or a denture-soaking solution. Practicing good denture hygiene helps ensure that your dentures work as intended.
